"You lose too much muscle."

Not true. Research shows short-term fasting actually helps preserve lean muscle while burning fat. Any temporary loss is quickly restored once you return to balanced eating — and the benefits to energy and inflammation far outweigh it.

"It slows down your metabolism."

Only slightly — and only during the fast itself. Once you start eating again with proper reintroduction, your metabolism rebalances quickly. The post-fast phase in this plan is designed specifically to support that transition.

"You don't need to detox — that's what your liver is for."

Yes, your liver and kidneys handle detoxification every day. But in a modern world of stress, processed foods, alcohol, and pollutants, those systems often need extra support. Fasting gives them a break — allowing your body to catch up on the job it's already designed to do.

"There's no science behind fasting."

FAQs

How much weight will I lose?

It depends on the individual and your current weight — 2.5–5kg is the average. Some of this is water weight or muscle that you'll gain back. The main idea of a juice fast is to kick-start your health journey, do some gut healing, and teach you to make healthier choices moving forward.

Can I eat something if I'm struggling?

I explain all of this in the plan. If you feel pain or extreme discomfort, please break the fast and consult with a healthcare professional.

What kind of juicer do I need?

It's very important you buy a masticating juicer, not a centrifugal one. A masticating juicer crushes and squeezes all the juice from the produce. A centrifugal one uses high-speed blades that create heat and destroy a lot of the nutrients (and they're a pain to clean). Here is one I recommend.

Can I just use a blender?

No. A juicer extracts the juice and removes the fibre. A blender simply blends the produce and leaves the fibre in.

What do I need to do a juice fast?

A juicer (or pre-made juices / bone broth), fruit and vegetables, psyllium husk, and apple cider vinegar.

Can I drink coffee?

You can drink up to 2 cups of decaffeinated coffee during the fast — but it must be Swiss Water Decaffeinated. Other brands use harsh chemicals to remove the caffeine. You can return to normal coffee from day 3 of break-fast.

What will happen to my bowel movements?

You'll experience changes — you might be constipated or have diarrhoea, usually changing around day 3. Colon plaque/mucus typically comes out on day 3 or 4. It feels different to a normal bowel movement — more like something is gently sliding out. Note: it can be hard to flush.

What can I do to boost my fast?

After a shower, alternate between hot and cold water for a few minutes — extreme temperatures support circulation, lymphatic drainage, and immune function. Do some form of light exercise daily to break a sweat. Sauna or steam room use is highly recommended.

When can I drink alcohol again?

Once the post-fast is completed. However, I strongly advise waiting as long as you can — alcohol damages the gut lining.

Can I make juices just from fruit?

No. Your juices should be mostly vegetables with some fruit for flavour and sweetness. There's a lot of sugar in fruit, so you don't want to drink only fruit juice for 3–5 days.

Should I buy organic produce?

Ideally yes, if you can — pesticides remain on non-organic produce even after washing. But non-organic is totally fine; just wash everything well before juicing. There's more information in the plan.

How often should I do a juice fast?

I recommend 1–2 times per year, leaving around 6 months between fasts. You can use this same plan for the rest of your life. Doing a juice fast too often is not recommended. For more frequent benefits, intermittent fasting (an 8–12 hour eating window) is incredibly powerful too.

Who should not do a juice fast?

Anyone under 18, pregnant or lactating women, those with critical heart conditions, diabetes, or chronic conditions such as cancer. If you're unsure whether you can do a juice fast, please contact your healthcare professional.
